Essential questions:
Why do people move?
What does it mean to be an American?
Why does it matter who writes history?
Was Columbus an important historical figure? Why or why not?
How can I answer essential questions?
Step 1: Formulating a claim
1. Restate the question in order to form a thesis or "claim" with 3 possible answers.
2. For example: What does it mean to be Irish?
3. Restate as: Being Irish has different meanings for different people which could include their social political, and economic beliefs. (Taken the same words and changed it into a claim.)
Step 2: Provide evidence
Social – Religion, music, dance
Political - Independence, democracy
Economic - Manual labor, farmers and fishermen
Tips for writing:
1. Write in THIRD PERSON (My family moved to Singapore to go to Singapore American School. –> The Qian family moved to Singapore to go to SAS.)
2. Must have a CLAIM
3. Good DETAILS
4. Finish in conclusion statement
